Trainer Chris Waller brings a strong hand of runners to Warwick Farm on Wednesday, none more so than Bella Rouge, with the lightly raced improver ready to win again in the Shalaa @ Arrowfield Handicap (1200m).
The three-year-old returned well at Kensington 16 days ago in a fast-time race and was brave in defeat, running second with a big gap to third.
She produced a career-peak figure and proved she revels on rain-affected ground.
The filly chased a strong tempo and tried hard all the way to the line. Punter’s Intelligence recorded she ran the fastest final 200m split of the entire meeting in 12. 26.
Jockey Tommy Berry will have options from the kind draw to either lead or find cover just off the speed. Further, her first-up effort indicates she is set to improve off that performance, so expect her to be in the finish.
The main danger is Mirra View, which held off her late challenge to beat Bella Rouge last start. In addition, blinkers were applied for the first time and, although being well ridden, she won in style.
She is rock-hard fit, consistent, proven on the rain-affected ground, and will be looking to extend her winning streak.
Also, Bethencourt bounced back into the winner’s stall after an impressive win at Randwick 18 days ago and looks well placed in the Drinkwise Mile (1600m).
He sat outside the leader at a moderate pace and sprinted away from his rivals, running the fourth-fastest final 400m split of the entire meeting in 25. 57.
All the five-year-old gelding’s peak figures have come on heavy ground, and any more significant rain will be to his advantage.
Expect him to roll forward, and a repeat of his last-start effort will make him hard to beat.
Opponent Sindacato brings an X-factor and trialled well five days ago in a fast-time heat.
The NZ import resumes and has been heavily backed since the market opened to be a genuine threat.
Best Bet: Race 6 #9 – Bella Rouge
Next Best: Race 4 #1 – Bethencourt
Best Value: Race 2 #1 – Rebel Shadow
