Wet track won’t faze Canberra duo on South Coast

They both like to holiday on the NSW South Coast, and they’re equally confident they can cross the mountains for a double strike at Tuesday’s feature Moruya meeting.

Likeable Canberra trainers Norm Gardner and Darryl Rolfe saddle up good value chances on yet another rain-affected track as the clouds continue to gather over the eastern seaboard.

In fact, the Rolfe camp has made a habit of heading to this coastal region when looking to snap a run of outs, with the last two winners coming at the Sapphire Coast just nine days ago, and Nowra two weeks prior.

And one of those winners, improving mare Stunning Sunrise is out to take the next step and go back-to-back in a Class 1 Handicap over 1010m.

The four-year-old daughter of New Approach was a dominant maiden winner at the Sapphire Coast in soft ground, and now she puts her heavy track credentials on the line, dropping significantly in weight.

Earlier in the opening race – Maiden Plate over 1010m – fellow Canberran Gardner puts his promising three-year-old Vella Fox to the test 18 days after surging home into second place on debut at Wagga.

The son of Foxwedge looks a real wet tracker, but he’ll need to do everything right against early fancied three-year-old Airliner who resumes for a second prep behind a smart heavy track trial win at Kembla.

It might also prove a lucrative meeting for long-time leading Canberra horseman Matt Dale who saddles up a couple of big chances, although both are based at his Moruya stables.

Lightly raced Cosmic Serenade, a filly Dale always believed would become a reliable sprinter, is third-up in a Benchmark 58 Handicap over the flying 920m, hunting a third career win at her ninth start.

The Dale yard then will be confident with progressive So You Think four-year-old Hombre Grande who tackles a Class 1 & Maiden Plate (1650m) also deep into his second prep.

Scratched from an earlier race to concentrate on this, Hombre Grande gets a much-needed weight drop, and will likely be targeted at a deeper provincial race, or even midweek metropolitan company, if he puts this lot to the sword.
